Minden at the Thames River Pageant

Berthholder Simon Britt recounts his trip with his Dutch fire launch Minden down the Thames

On September 10th 2011 at 14.54 hours Minden slipped her lines from Oyster Pier on the Thames and took up station approximately 300m behind HRH Royal Barge. Minden then led the historic/motorised section down river following the LFB Fireboat Fire/Flash. Both making water as we went it was a magnificent sight as we passed all the bridges. This pageant was a trial run/rehearsal for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and it is hoped that Minden will be invited back in June 2012.

Every good story starts with a saga or trial of some sort and this one is no different. In early August  I received an email informing me that Minden would not be invited to attend. I was disappointed to say the least as prior to this I was informed that we were invited!! On August 27th I received a further email which then requested my attendance on the 10th September?? This was the "oh b***er" moment because I would have to lift her out, paint and pamper her in three evenings and one weekend. This was a huge task which was only achieved with a massive rallying around of friends and family.

A huge "thank you" must go to Jim and his team at Harbour Chandlers for every item loaned and donated, this was going above and beyond the call of duty. Also to Alison and her team - Neil, Pete and James really pulled it off and made this event happen, again I can't thank everybody enough.

Enjoy the pictures (In the Gallery) and fingers crossed Minden will be leading a 1000 boat flotilla in June 2012.
